Poem 87- Flattery will get you nowhere

Flattery will get you nowhere

The smallest compliment should have come
Easily to your pugnacious lips
As I ladled kindness after sweetness to
Shore up your failing personal attributes
I wanted to like you
I wanted to trust you
I needed an opportunity to hope for
New words and warmth
No chance you nice, kind, boring,
Self-righteous child
Feel the force of my forced compliments
As made the choice to be nice
And you made the decision to
Be a truculent hamburger
Inevitable, you had too little self-awareness
To be applicable to me

I suppose it was the idea of you that
Deserved the acceptance
